Six months of GEO work and I still cannot figure out what is actually moving the needle

Reflections on Six Months of GEO Optimization: The Challenges of Measuring Impact in AI Mentions

Over the past six months, I have dedicated extensive effort to refining my strategies in geographic engine optimization (GEO). Despite immersing myself in the latest research, experimenting with various tactics, and consulting with numerous industry experts, I find myself confronting a persistent challenge: it remains unclear what actions truly influence the movement of the needle.

Throughout this period, I have explored a multitude of approaches—each promising potential benefits. I have engaged with a dozen consultants, each offering their own theories and recommended practices, and I have diligently tested these methods in real-world scenarios. Yet, even after rigorous application, I struggle to attribute any significant shifts in AI-generated mentions or responses to specific interventions.

This experience highlights a fundamental obstacle in the field of AI and SEO: the measurement problem. Unlike traditional metrics, where tangible indicators such as traffic or rankings offer clear feedback, the success of efforts aimed at influencing AI mentions is inherently nebulous. Determining whether a particular strategy is effective becomes exceptionally complicated when the ultimate output—AI mentions or responses—is influenced by a multitude of variables beyond direct control.

The core challenge lies in establishing reliable, measurable indicators of progress when the output depends on complex AI models responding to user queries. Without precise attribution, it is difficult to refine strategies or justify resource allocation.

In conclusion, while six months of dedicated GEO work have deepened my understanding of the landscape, they have also underscored the importance of developing better measurement tools. Moving forward, the focus should be on creating more transparent and actionable metrics that can help practitioners decipher what truly moves the needle in this intricate space.
